The UK is home to Europe’s largest ICT sector and has in recent years been a major enabler of economic growth. There are over 150,000 incorporated businesses, as well as numerous unincorporated ones, collectively generating c.10% of our total GDP.
In terms of M&A the sector has probably been one of the most active of all sectors in recent years. This is in part due to technology advances (e.g. the ever-escalating interest in cloud services, social networking and digital media, the changing landscape in IT security etc.) but also due to the fact that many companies in the sector have weathered the recession remarkably well. It is not uncommon at all for us to be talking to companies who are reporting record figures. There are plenty of buyers out there with substantial cash balances and a willingness to apply them to acquisitions. On the seller side, we are finding that businesses putting in strong performances and those occupying certain niches remain very attractive.

Prism commissioned a research project into M&A in the ICT sector, specifically concerning medium sized companies (£0.5m to £10m turnover range). The research looked at attitudes towards succession and growth, the basis for valuations and the thinking underlying sales and acquisitions.
